The Squaire , also known as Airrail Center Frankfurt, is a 660 m (2,165.35 ft) long and 45 m (147.64 ft) tall office building located at Frankfurt Airport. It was built from 2006 to 2011 on top of an existing railway station and has a connecting bridge to Terminal 1 for pedestrians. Its total of 140,000 m2 rentable floor space makes it Germany's largest office building. The Saalhof is the oldest conserved building in the Altstadt district and dates to the 12th century. It was used as an exhibition hall by Dutch clothiers when trade fairs were held during the 14th and 15th centuries. The Saalhof was partly destroyed in World War II and later rebuilt.

In the same year a new city district, Riederwald, was created on territory that had formerly belonged to Seckbach and Ostend. Postwar reconstruction took place in a sometimes simple modern style, thus changing Frankfurt's architectural face.

It is the only German city considered to be an alpha world city as listed by the Loughborough University group's 2010 inventory, which was a promotion from the group's 2008 inventory when it was ranked as an alpha minus world city . During the 1970s, the state government of Hesse wanted to expand the city's administrative boundaries to include the entire urban area. This would have made Frankfurt officially the second-largest city in Germany after Berlin with up to 3 million inhabitants. However, because local authorities did not agree, the administrative territory is still much smaller than its actual urban area. Summers in Frankfurt can get very warm, when compared to the rest of the country.
